UMGUNGUNDLOVANA
Umvoti municipality is a category B municipality and consists of the former Greytown and Kranskop Municipalities, rural areas which includes Tribal Authorities.
Umvoti village was established by the land commission and was renamed Greytown in 1854, after Sir George Grey, Governor of the Cape. Greytown was known by the Zulu's as Ungungundlovana, the place of the little elephant.
After the municipal Demarcation in terms of the Demarcation Act, act 27 of 1998 and the 5 December 2000 municipal Elections, the Municipal Council resolved to name the newly demarcated area KZ 245 to Umvoti Municipality.
The Municipality is predominantly ural with a 70 30 mix of commercial farming land and ingonyama trust land. The total area is very large at 2563 square kilometers, 34 172 voters, 11 wards, 21 councilors, with a total population of 116 803.
